We have been receiving reports of residents losing water pressure because of freezing and breaking residential lines.

Running water at nighttime to prevent freezing is effective. This method will use a lot of water if done incorrectly. Here are helpful tips and tricks to assist you in pipe freezing prevention.

A very slow trickle of water is adequate to prevent freeze-ups.

One running faucet in your home is adequate to prevent freeze-ups.

Adjust your faucet by opening until it has a fast drip and then open a little more until the drip starts to turn to the smallest stream possible. A pencil sized stream is too much.

If you are at home during the day and using the restroom and sinks occasionally, there is no need to continually run a faucet during the day time hours.

Only run your faucets continually at night and minimize the use as highlighted above.

Leave cabinet doors under your sinks open to allow warm air to help prevent freezing water lines.

If your water service connection is in a crawl space that is unheated and uninsulated, insulate with fiberglass or foam insulation.

If you have any questions please contact your Public Works Department at 719-267-3134.

Thank you and Happy Holidays!
